Xeomin - What is it and what does it do?

Xeomin is a prescription medication used in facial injectable treatments. It contains botulinum toxin type A, which is a protein that helps to relax facial muscles. This can result in a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles, forehead lines, and fine lines. Treatments generally last for 3-4 months before re-treatment is necessary.

What is XEOMINⓇ?

XEOMINⓇ is FDA Approved injectable for adults to treat moderate to severe wrinkles or frown lines between the eyebrows. A protein purified from bacterium, Botulinum toxin type A, is  the active ingredient of this formula that can restore youth back to any aged skin. Contact us today to schedule a consultation appointment and find out if XEOMINⓇ may be right for you.

How Does XEOMINⓇ Treatment Work?

As people grow older, the more the muscles in their faces begin to define. This is caused from both loss of elasticity and volume as well as frequent muscle contractions. The greater the frequency of muscle contractions, the greater the skin folds and furrows with age, creating noticeable frown lines and other wrinkles. The botulinum toxin in XEOMINⓇ targets these contracting muscles to reduce their activity, thus temporarily reducing any frown lines between the eyebrows.

What Can I Expect During the XEOMINⓇ Treatment?

A XEOMINⓇ treatment takes about 10-20 minutes. No anesthesia is required before XEOMINⓇ is administered into the muscles of the forehead.

When Can I See Results?

Depending on the patient will depend how fast results can be seen and how long they will last. Typically, a visible smoothing of the skin can be seen as soon as 3-4 days following the treatment with results that can last up to a few months.

The ingredients in Xeomin is mainly a protein that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum toxin products help to relax facial muscles by blocking nerve signals. When injected into the skin, it can temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines with consistent results. Results vary depending on each individual.

Botulinum toxin products Type A is also used to treat other conditions such as migraine headaches, excessive sweating, chronic sialorrhea, and muscle spasms.

XeominⓇ Compared to Botox

Similar to other drugs in this category, including Botox® and Dysport®, that also have FDA approval for the treatment of facial wrinkles. Now that Xeomin® is available and FDA approved, doctors can use it both on-label and off-label to treat the same facial lines treated by Botox® and Dysport®, including frown lines, crow's feet and forehead wrinkles. Both XeominⓇ and Botox are effective at temporarily reducing the appearance of wrinkles. However, there are a few key differences between the two treatments.

First, while Botox is made from botulinum toxin A, XeominⓇ is made from botulinum toxin A without any additives. This means that XeominⓇ may be less likely to cause unwanted reactions than Botox. Additionally, XeominⓇ takes effect more quickly than Botox (usually within 3-5 days as opposed to 7-10 days for Botox).

Finally, because Xeomin does not contain any additives, it may last slightly longer than Botox (up to 3 months as opposed to 2-3 months for Botox).

One big factor that comes into play when considering any cosmetic treatment is cost. So, how much do Xeomin and Botox cost? On average, Xeomin treatments run about $12 per unit, while Botox treatments average $10-$15 per unit. So, while Xeomin is slightly more expensive per unit, you may need fewer units of Xeomin to achieve your desired results—which could make it more cost-effective in the long run.

Side Effects of Xeomin vs Botox

Both Xeomin and Botox are considered safe for most people. The most common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, or pain at the injection site. These usually resolve on their own within a few days. Both formulations contain human albumin as an inactive ingredient, and it may trigger a reaction in people who are allergic to albumin.

In rare cases, patients may experience trouble swallowing, trouble speaking, trouble breathing, muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, eye pain, neck pain, extreme injection site pain, or loss of bladder control. If you experience any of these side effects, seek medical help or contact your healthcare provider immediately.

There is a risk that all botulinum products may spread from the area where they were injected to other parts of the body, causing potentially life-threatening swallowing and breathing problems. This was predominantly seen in children treated with Botox off-label for cerebral palsy. Reviewing one's medical history is imperative.

If you're considering getting neuromodulator injections to smooth out wrinkles and give your face a more youthful appearance, you may be wondering if Xeomin or Botox is right for you. Both are excellent choices that can provide great results—but there are some subtle differences between the two that may make one a better fit for you than the other. Consider factors such as price, how many units, potential risks, and results before making your decision so that you can choose the best injectable for your needs!
